Gibbon Spotting Ratanakiri Cambodia
Gibbon 2-day/1-night Eco-adventure
Veun Sai -Siem Pang National Park covers an area of over 50,000 hectares with large areas of vast evergreen forests. It is home to many endangered and critically endangered species, including Giant Ibises, Leopard Cats, Pangolins, Lorises, and Langurs, as well as the largest population of a newly discovered species of Gibbon, the Northern Yellow Cheeked Crested Gibbon.
After many years of research, a group of gibbons is habituated to the presence of humans, so tourists have a very high chance of seeing and following the gibbons in their natural habitat without disturbing their behavior.
Leaving Banlung by car at 10:00, we travel to Veun Sai where we will continue our journey by ferry across the Sesan River. The ferry ride provides a great opportunity to see the uniqueness of the landscape along the Sesan, a river rich in biodiversity.
You will be warmly welcomed by the community and checked in. The community transportation group will take us by motorbike to I-Tub village, about a 30 minute trip. When we arrive we will have lunch.
I-Tub village is made up of ethnic Lao. Here you will experience their unique local culture and food. After that we will depart along a natural road from which you can observe the different views of the conservation area. This is a very scenic walk, and you are likely to see a range of different bird species. In the evening a camp in the jungle will be set up and local food prepared, which you can enjoy while listening to the nighttime sounds of wildlife.
Dinner is around 1830 at camp. After dinner there is an optional night walk (approximately 1 hour) to view nocturnal wildlife. In base camp, our generator provides electricity between 1800-2130.
On morning of day two we wake up at 0330 to depart at 0400 (the Gibbons are early risers) for our 1 hour hike to the Gibbon forest. Here we wait for the call of the Gibbon, which usually happens at sunrise. Your experienced local guide will aim to locate the habituated group of Gibbons by following their haunting call. We will then watch and follow them for approximately 2 hours as they make their way through the forest canopy. During this time we will enjoy hot drinks and a jungle breakfast.
We then return to camp for lunch before making our way back to BanLung, arriving at around 3pm.
