Ratanakiri

Gem Village of Ratanakiri

Near the Gold Mining areas is the market Phsar Bor Keo, where gems and precious stones can be purchased. The Kreung and Tumpaun ethnic groups have been carrying out small scale mining here for centuries. The 'Mines' are simple holes dug in the ground, usually 1 metre in diameter and a maximum of 20 metres deep. They are dug by hand and the soil is filled into buckets and lifted out by rope. This is a family affair, generally with the husband digging, the wife heaving the buckets, and the children sifting the soil.
