Koh Ker Temple
The site of Koh Ker covers a vast area of more than 80 square kilometers, with hundreds of different temples, Shrines, and monuments. Like most temple complexes of this period it is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Inscriptions give the name of the area as "The City Of Lingams" for the many carved stone Lingams at the temples. Today, only a few impressive specimens remain. Many of the shrines are essentially unexplored in modern times due to the remote nature of the area. This remoteness historically worked in the complexes favor, as during the change from Hinduism to Buddhism when many temples were modified to suit the different religion, much here was spared and remains as it was originally built. Time and looting have of course taken their toll, nevertheless the area is unique.
