Stung Treng

Mekong River Trip to Laos

Above Stung Treng the Mekong River is lightly populated to the border of Laos. The scenery and the river vary greatly depending on the season, with islands, and rapids appearing and disappearing with the change in water level. The plants  have their own schedule too with some flowering in the wet season, and some in the dry. The heavily forested banks recall Conrad when he wrote "Going up that river was like travelling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings'. This can be a challenging trip for the Boatman towards the end of the dry season.
